{"id":1,"date":"2024-12-01T22:02:56","date_gmt":"2024-12-01T22:02:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/period3withmadib.com\/?p=1"},"modified":"2024-12-13T07:40:46","modified_gmt":"2024-12-13T07:40:46","slug":"hello-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/period3withmadib.com\/?p=1","title":{"rendered":"11 Things I\u2019ve Learned in My 11 Years of Teaching:\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Relationships are so important.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBe firm, but fair.\u201d- My Grandpa and retired Band Director\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t be afraid to be yourself.\u00a0 Teach things that you are passionate about and relate what you are teaching to things that you genuinely love.\u00a0 I love afternoon tea, brunch, royalty, love, the finer things in life, fashion, and art.\u00a0 Throughout the year we talk about these things.\u00a0 I had so many classes where I listened to sports metaphors for things and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s bad for women to show what they are passionate about. I liked when my teachers were passionate about their subject and their passion made me more excited about what we were learning. I hope that I can emulate that with my students.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI think you are a good teacher, but I think you could be an even greater teacher if you incorporate grammar lessons into your curriculum.\u201d &#8211; My mother in law and former English teacher\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Not everything needs to be graded.\u00a0 But also if you stay on top of grading then grading doesn\u2019t become as big of a chore.\u00a0 I try to have everything graded by the time I leave on Friday afternoon.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You are in charge of your classroom.\u00a0 If something isn\u2019t working you can change things at any time.\u00a0 Even in the middle of a unit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure to plan things that bring you JOY.\u00a0 What did you want teaching to be like when you envisioned being a teacher?\u00a0 Make sure to plan lessons like that regularly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep notes from your students. Read them when you are having a bad day. Read them when you are having a good day. Read them when you are procrastinating grading during your prep period.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Time goes by so quickly.\u00a0 It\u2019s crazy how fast 10 months goes by.\u00a0 Every year I start off worried if my students will like me (I\u2019m such an enneagram 2) AND if I will like them.\u00a0 Then it turns out that I L O V E them.\u00a0 Then the end of May comes too soon and I\u2019m saying goodbye to some of my favorite people and crying.\u00a0 I try to remember this even on days when they are really bugging me, that at the end of the year I\u2019m going to miss them and to give them grace.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>P O W E R\u00a0 S T A N D A R D S: Figure out what yours are, and make sure that you are covering them every quarter.\u00a0 They will make your teaching more cohesive and just better.\u00a0 I would say to have about 10 standards that you are going to teach throughout the year every quarter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s okay to do repetitive tasks.\u00a0 I thought when I started teaching that every day while we were reading a book we needed a new activity.\u00a0 This did a few things: 1, it was hard to plan a novel unit, 2. I don\u2019t think any of my students fully mastered any of the skills I was teaching them, 3.
